10 Songs That Inspire My Travels

Music Audio Wave

Whether I’m sitting in an airport departure lounge, relaxing at 30,000 feet, or just chilling at home, music is something that frequently has the ability to inspire me.
I’ve put together a list of 10 songs that never fail to make an impact.  As you’ll see, my tastes are pretty eclectic!

Note: Some of these tracks are Christian.  However, I believe that anyone of any faith, or none, may be able to find some meaning in the lyrics.

1. Kerry Ellis – ‘Defying Gravity’

This one always makes me feel positive about travel and inspires my desire to try and ‘change the world’

…if you care to find me, look to the Western sky…

…everyone deserves a chance to fly…

…some things I cannot change, but ’til I try I’ll never know…

2. Matthew West – ‘World Changers’

Again, this feeds my ‘change the world’ urges and gives me a boost when I feel like I’m not making a difference or when people criticise my lifestyle

…you live your life like you’re here on a mission…

…when you’re knocked to the ground you don’t stay down…

…don’t you ever give up…

3. Avicii – ‘The Nights’

A feel good song that pushes the message that making memories is more important than making money

…live a life you will remember…

…don’t let it slip away…

…made memories we knew would never fade…

4. Fireflight – ‘We Are Alive’

Just as the title, this song celebrates the feeling of being alive, something that I feel very acutely when I travel

…just being who we are, we are alive…

…I take hold of this precious time given to me…

…share the love…let it rain like a waterfall…

5. Matthew West – ‘Do Something’

Another song about just getting out there and trying to make a difference in the world. Because if you don’t, then who will?

…if not us, then who…

…I’m sick and tired of a life with no desire…

…we’re never gonna change the world by standing still…

6. Natasha Bedingfield – ‘Unwritten’

This song evokes strong memories for me. It speaks of it never being too late because your future can be whatever you want it to be.

…the pen’s in my hand, ending unplanned…

…live your life with arms wide open…

…today is where your book begins, the rest is still unwritten…

7. Tori Kelly – ‘Colours of the Wind’

This song appeals to my love of the natural world and all the beauty I see when I travel. It encourages me to appreciate the planet and to live, and travel, responsibly

…every rock and tree and creature has a life…

…come run the hidden pine trails of the forest…

…you can own the earth and still all you own is earth…

8. Tom Petty – ‘Time to Move On’

I wasn’t sure this one was going to make the cut, but it did. It sums up that feeling that I can’t just sit still – there’s a whole lot of unknown out there to explore

…which way to something better…

…time to move on, time to get going…

…what lies ahead I have no way of knowing…

9. Aerosmith – ‘Fly Away From Here’

A bit of an iconic one. I guess I relate to it because there’s always a part of jumping on an aeroplane that’s about searching for something…or about running away?

…ain’t nothing gonna change if we stay around here…

…never too late to start again…

…our hopes and dreams are out there somewhere…

10. John Denver – ‘Leaving On A Jet Plane’

This can be bit of a weepy one. I read into it the story of solo travel – you do it and you love it, but sometimes you wish there was someone to love alongside you. Leaving everyone behind as you jump on that plane…it can be tough

…don’t know when I’ll be back again…

…dream about the days to come when I won’t have to leave alone…

…every place I go, I’ll think of you…

Oh, wait…I’m not finished…

Music to dream of Africa

Now it’s your turn. Which songs inspire you? Perhaps they make you want to travel, or to do something that goes against the crowd. Maybe they make you feel like you can rule the world. Anything that makes you feel good is something I’d love to hear.
